There are fewer serpentine-dependent taxa in coastal areas compared to more inland areas, a pattern that may be due to higher species competition. Accessory chlorite, talc, and magnetite may be present. The lower saprolite of a serpentinite profile in a Mediterranean climate shows abundant altered pyroxenes, serpentine, chlorite, plagioclase and chalcedony (García et al., 1974). The Tainiovaara deposit is clearly magmatic in origin, as indicated by the magmatic sulfide assemblages, but was modified by postmagmatic processes. If so, then a greater net migration from a Klamath source to the northern NCR may have helped result in producing ~ 28 shared near-endemic species. The Klamaths thus are in a not-too-wet/not-too-dry, just right Goldilocks zone of many ancient and isolated serpentine areas conducive to speciation and much larger areas of continuous serpentine that reduces extinction rates (Harrison et al., 2004).
